Yup, we're self editing with no experience and only one of us passed high school Eng. We decided to break up the job into "Passes". Each pass focusing on a different group of things we think needs to be done.
1st Pass: Literary Structure, Basic format - Moving rules around to make sure it flows better. Make sure it doesn't leave the reader confused and madly flipping back & forth for clarification. We completed this pass. EX: Making sure Difficulty and Time is explained before talking about affecting difficulty by taking more or less time.
2nd Pass: Adding Clarifications to terms, Solidify rulings - Stream lining the rules to fit the same logic. Like in a point and click adventure, the logic of the world must be consistent. This is also where character and player balancing comes in. Character balancing: making sure there's always a solution to a problem causing mechanic. EX: Bleeding >< a way to stop bleeding, Amputation >< a way to reattach or replace. Player balancing: making sure book keeping is kept to a minimum. Making sure micromanaging is a choice, not the default. CURRENT PASS
3rd Pass: Clean up formatting set aside picture space - Notes, image placement, proper chart placement. Resizing and coloring the charts to make them easier to read. Figuring out how to visually have the theme play out on the pages and through out the book. Avoiding charts being split between two or three pages. Piecing together something like a visual tempo to play well with the surrounding words. NEXT 10 points to anyone who knows the movie in the title image!
